Students of all ages will enjoy living the history of the Australian 1850s Gold Rush days and participate in an array of fun and educational activities.

Education for all ages and stages. Select standard packages created from over 20 years of the Colony's experience, or customise your own.

Integration with HSIE Gold, Australiana, Environment and Indigenous Culture. Proximity to Canberra enables extension to do the Government module. COGS related Integrated Learning for years 5-6. 

School Excursions and School Camps

Experienced guides, local Koori elders and educational facilitators understand student needs, explain things clearly and assist in a friendly manner.

Complementry learning to fulfill Syllabus outcomes and other basic curriculum areas. Social and behavioural challenges are met with excellent purpose-built accommodation, which assists student supervision.

School Day Trips

An excursion to the Gold Rush Colony in Mogo is easily accessible for schools within the local South Coast regions of the Illawarra, Eurobodalla, Southern Highlands and Sapphire Coast. Mogo is near Batemans Bay, approx 2 1/2 hrs from Canberra ACT & 3 1/2 hrs south of Sydney NSW Australia.

1/2 Day Tours

School excursions for half day gold educational tours and hands-on activities at the Gold Rush Colony, Mogo.

Breakout groups of approx 20 students rotate through the educational activities listed in these options.

Traditional Gold History Tour:
 - Australiana
 - Alluvial gold panning experience
 - Obtain individual Miner's certification
 - 1850s goldfields & town dwellings

Australian Colonies Tour (NSW Curriculum):
 - Timber getting
 - Chinese Joss House
 - Creating shelter - wattle & daub Settlers' cottage

Both tours also cover gold history, gold mining and gold extraction. There is a rock crusher demonstration and the woodturner and blacksmith demonstrate their old-world crafting skills. Student worksheets supplied.

Half day tours take approximately 2 hours and cost from $14 per person. Designed for years 5&6 primary school groups of up to 120 students. Can be adapted for other ages and tour groups.

Excursions can be booked for any time of day. Bring your own recess and/or lunch to have in the camp kitchen or request a quote for catering when booking.

  • SCHOOL CAMP COSTS - Overnight school camp pricing is subject to change and starts at $112.30 per student  based on primary school groups of 40 students and 4 teachers, or as specified (teachers & bus drivers free).
  • ACCOMMODATION - All packages include en-suited Bunkhouse accommodation for students and self-contained Miners Cabins for teachers (twin share or single if possible), meals and activities as shown on the itineraries. Bus drivers are accommodated in their own room. See Accommodation page for details.
  • BUNKHOUSE BEDDING - Students will need to bring there own sleeping bags, pillow, towel and toiletries. The cabins have linen and basic toiletries supplied.

Schools staying overnight at the Gold Rush Colony enjoy clean and comfortable on-site bunkhouse & cabin accommodation.

At night, the large campfire site beckons students to listen, learn and participate in Aboriginal dreamtime stories or sing-a-long with Aussie and Irish ballards.

Schools - General Info

Staff at the multi-award winning education centre at the Gold Rush Colony in Mogo are looking forward to your School's visit.

  • CUSTOMISATION - The above school excursions and school camp itineraries are suggestions only. The Gold Rush Colony's experienced educational facilitators will help teachers to refine activities and times around required outcomes and student needs. Off-site activities can also be co-ordinated and added on to your custom school package.
  • WORKING WITH CHILDREN - All staff and educators coming into contact with students have current Working With Children Checks (WWCC). 
  • ACTIVITY DETAILS -  All activities are designed to be engaging and fun learning experiences and may be adapted depending on your school groups ages and outcome needs. Please see the Educational Activities page for details. 
  • INCLUSIONS & CATERING - Transport is not included. Recess and lunches are not included (unless specified). Full catering is available on request for school excursions and camps. Packages include all activities, accommodation and meals as specified. Meals are satisfying, traditional homecooked with alternating menus (depending on length of stay). 2 weeks notice is required for special dietary requirements - such as Vegan, Celiac or Halal (Certified).
  • FACILITIES & ACCESSIBILITY - Ample day and overnight parking for cars and buses (coach pump out available). Use of the camp kitchen or tavern for lunch and breaks by arrangement. Most of the tour paths and all group meet up points and buildings are wheelchair friendly. Accessible drop-off parking at reception and accessible toilets available.
  • VENUE - The Gold Rush Colony is purpose built with school groups in mind, the configuration of the accommodation is perfect for supervision. Bunkhouses face onto the large covered camp kitchen which is ideal for meet ups and breaks. The camp kitchen leads onto a huge grassed area with the campfire site and a volley ball court. There is ample space for students to burn off steam during free time or find a quiet nook to relax. Book early for exclusive use of the Gold Rush Colony after hours. 
  • GIFT SHOP - If students have been allowed pocket money, the gift shop may be accessed for purchases. A wide range of Australiana and gold rush themed memorabilia, gems, rocks and other items as souvenirs of their Gold Rush Colony visit.
  • TERMS & CONDITIONS - Visits are subject to availability and based on minimum numbers.  A full list of options, School's Risk Assessment, student code of conduct and other applicable documents will be sent out with your schools information pack when you make your booking enquiry.
