12) Apothecary Barber Undertaker

Multi-tasking was common in the early settlement. Professionals and tradesmen used with whatever skills they had. Often one person filled the role of doctor dentist barber and apothecary. Many were simply bush-doctors
This is very different to the system of health care in Australia today, where each professional has its carefully delineated role. Each has a university or other tertiary level of qualification, and we can be reasonably sure of their level of expertise.

Medicines of the 1850's often had no proven efficacy, might have been toxic, or addictive.

Most commonly used painkillers were willow-bark infusions ( now we have aspirin) and laudanum (effectively a tincture of opium).
